We Day again made a huge splash at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto yesterday. The place was packed with students all ramped up to make a difference. We Day is a day long event that takes place all over North America event that brings together young people that have already shown interest in learning how to make change in the world. Lead by the founders of Free the Children, Craig and Marc Kielburger, the event is a blast, in part because it is basically one big concert. From surprise guest Kendrick Lamar to pop favourite Lights, the musical guests brought the house down.

We were there and picked the top five biggest musical moments from the big day.

1) Kendrick Lamar (above):

The hottest new rap superstar was the day’s big surprise guest. But what made it extra special was that it was the first time Kendrick played his new song i. But the tough guy from the streets of Compton let his soft side show to match the good mood of the day. The vibes must have been contagious. He had the whole crowd turn to each other and tell their neighbour that they love them and asked everyone to put their hearts in the air. Although it was a good tie in to his new song that features the chorus, “I love myself…” the rapper seemed completely genuine with his positivity. We like this side of Kendrick!

2) Kardinal Offishall:

We Day Toronto

Kardi took the stage twice at We Day yesterday. He closed the show with a performance of “Freedom” with JRDN, a song with a message that matched the vibe of We Day perfectly. But his biggest moment was when he opened the show with the official song of the We Day Dance, “We Turn It Up,” which was re-recorded especially for the 2014 We Day events. Ask any person who attends We Day, the official dance is one of the more memorable parts of the event. Students do it for days after at their schools, at home and on the bus. So when Kardinal performed the song it definitely set up the day in the right way.

3) R5:

R5

R5 are quickly become the hottest new band for pop music lovers. When they were introduced by Shawn Desman, you could barely hear his words over the screams of the audience. The family band played their hit single “Heart Made Up On You” and got the whole crowd dancing. They definitely have a rock edge with their cool shaggy locks and edgy style. This may have been their first We Day but based on the reaction of the crowd, it would be safe to predict that they will be back for more.

4) Lights:

Lights took the stage early in the day to perform her latest single “Up We Go”. This was her third performance as part of We Day after performing in 2012 in Alberta and Manitoba. She had the crowd loving her every move and clapping along as one of the early performances of the day. At the end of her performance she told the audience how inspiring she thought they all are. As a new mom, we bet a day like We Day makes her feel really good about the future of her little girl.

5) Hedley:

Hedley

Hedley are almost guaranteed to pop up at any We Day. They have performed at 10 We Days in Canada and Seattl and they have been to three different continents as Free The Children ambassadors. They took the We Day stage after coming back just a day earlier from a volunteer trip in Ecuador. The guys are definitely beloved by the We Day audience and Jacob Hoggard took the time mid song to ask the crowd if they are the generation we have been waiting for. They played two songs, “Crazy For You” and “Heaven In Our Headlights.” If you missed them this time, you can be sure that they will be back at We Day again.

You can watch the best moments from We Day 2014 on November 11 at 8E/5P on MTV.
